This Micro USB cable has an electroluminescent filament inside the jacket, so charging becomes something you can see: a beam of light streams down the lead toward the phone, and the pace of the stream follows the current — brisk when the battery is empty, slowing as it fills, and stopping altogether once the phone reaches full charge. It is a charging indicator you can read from across the room, which is exactly why it gets kept.

The EL technology draws little power and switches itself intelligently: the glow restarts whenever charging resumes and stops again when the battery is full, so a phone left overnight is not trickled forever. The cable is a normal charge-and-sync lead for Android smartphones, connecting to computer USB ports and wall adapters alike, with the glow in blue, green or purple on a black or white jacket at approximately 80 cm.
