USB TTL to 3.5mm Audio Jack Serial Cable

A USB to TTL serial cable that ends in a 3.5 mm audio jack instead of bare wires or a DB9 — the connector several instruments and single-board devices use for their serial or console port. It is the cable for the device whose serial link is a jack, where no standard adapter fits.

On board, an FT232RL or FT232RQ handles the USB-to-serial conversion. The 6-way versions of this family provide Tx, Rx, RTS#, CTS#, VCC and GND, while the audio-jack version provides the three signals the jack can carry: Tx, Rx and GND. It also offers a +5V or +3.3V output that can power external logic from the USB port.

Specifications

Two notes. The audio-jack version carries only three signals, so the hardware flow-control lines (RTS/CTS) are not available on this build — if your application needs them, choose the 6-way variant. And check the jack pinout against your device: a 3.5 mm serial jack is not wired like an audio connection, so confirm Tx, Rx and GND land on the right contacts.
